Alabama-Huntsville teeming with awards as season comes to a close
The UAH men’s basketball team received multiple honors from the Gulf South Conference (GSC) this Tuesday as senior Tommy Murr was named GSC Player of the Year and head coach Mick Hedgepeth was awarded GSC Coach of the Year.
Murr joins exclusive company as he is the eighth player in UAH history to win the award. This is also the second time in the last three years a Charger has received the honor, as Chaney Johnson received the Player of the Year Award in 2022-23.
For the season, Murr is averaging 20.9 points per game, 4.4 rebounds per game, and 5.8 assists per game. He also posted an outstanding 50-40-90 statline with a shooting percentage of 53.4 percent from the field, 41.4 percent from three, and 93.7 percent from the free throw line.

Hedgepeth earned the award in his first season as head coach for the Chargers. He led the team to a 27-1 overall record and a conference record of 22-0.
As a team, the Chargers hold the longest winning streak across all NCAA divisions. The team is second in all of NCAA Division II in effective field goal percentage at 60.5%.
The GSC also named four Chargers to the all-conference team: Blake Campbell and Murr received first-team honors, while Luke Burnett and Daniel Saylor made GSC second-team. This is the most All-GSC performers by any team in the conference this season, making it the second season in a row UAH has accomplished that feat.
Campbell was the second leading scorer in the GSC. Twice this year, he scored 30 or more points and scored over 20 points on eight occasions. Burnett’s 98 made three-pointers this season was best in the GSC, and he also became the all-time conference leader in three-pointers made. Finally, Saylor led the conference in blocks (72), ranking him third all-time in UAH history.
The Chargers will play Lee University in the 2025 Truist GSC Championship Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. TG
