Mountain Brook, Jasper battling for 6A Tennis Crown

Spartans hold 1-point lead over Vikings at Mobile Tennis Center

The defending state tennis champion Mountain Brook High School boys held a slim one-point lead over Jasper after the first day of the AHSAA Class 6A State Tennis Championships concluded at Mobile Tennis Center on Monday.
   

The Spartans managed 41 points and the Jasper Vikings totaled 40 heading into the final day on Tuesday. Homewood and Northridge were tied for third with 28 points each.

In Class 6A girls’ competition, Mountain Brook totaled 40 points Monday to take an eight-point lead into Tuesday’s action over Muscle Shoals (32). UMS-Wright is in third place with 29 points while Hartselle and Pike Road was tied for fourth place with 21 points each.
 

The Class 1A/3A boys’ and girls’ state championship will also conclude on Tuesday. The smaller class opened play Monday in the early session.

Advancing to the Class 6A boys’ No. 1 singles semifinals were three ninth graders and one senior. Trinity Presbyterian’s James Treadwell, who won the 6A No. 2 singles championship last season, advanced to the No. 1 finals with a 38-1 record on the season and more than 100 match wins for his career. He faces Northridge freshman Will Thorn (13-2) in the semifinals Tuesday morning.

Mountain Brook senior Thomas Austin (22-9), who was runner-up to Treadwell in last year’s No. 2 singles, will face Pelham eighth-grader Sipho Mashego (21-8) in the other semifinal match.

Advancing to the Class 6A girls’ semifinals Tuesday morning are Pelham junior Allyson Pieper (26-8) and UMS-Wright senior Sarah Ladd (15-3) in one semifinal, and McGill-Toolen Catholic freshman Clare LeCour (8-6) versus Mountain Brook senior Ann Royal Goodson (21-11). Goodson won the state title at No. 3 singles in 2024.
