Talegate Featured Athlete: Taya Newton, Andalusia High School

Andalusia junior Taya Newton has already had quite the high school career. In addition to being named Student-Athlete of the Year in 2024, Taya has a perfect 4.0 in the classroom and stars in three sports: softball, volleyball, and cheer.

In softball, Taya contributes all over the diamond but says her favorite position is center field. She also plays shortstop and pitcher for head coach Ray Bozeman.

Taya plays outside hitter and block solo for head volleyball coach Sarah Kelley and is a member of the cheerleading team under the direction of head coach Ali Rogers.

Andalusia High School, Taya says, provides an environment in which student-athletes can flourish. “I definitely like the atmosphere here. It not only helps you to become better as an athlete, but also a person,” she says.

Taya participates Anchor Club and Usher Club at AHS and also received the HOBY Youth Leadership Award and the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award for her service to those organizations.

Taya’s parents, Tony and Celina Newton, have made a big impact on her throughout the years. Taya says her mom’s work as a physical therapist has inspired her to choose that career track, and says that more than anyone, her dad challenges her to excel. “He pushes me a lot in the classroom and on the field, or whatever sport I play,” Taya says.

Outside of school and sports, Taya loves to slip away on the weekend for a quick beach trip. Her hobbies include tanning, running, and cooking, and says her favorite holiday/time of year is Valentine’s Day.

Taya says she’s “very excited” about the upcoming softball season and believes the Lady Bulldogs are going to be competitive once again. It’s clear that the sport she’s been playing since she was a kid is her number one love and definitely a highlight of her high school experience.

The good news for both Andalusia High School and Taya is that there’s still another year for her to notch more memories. She’s had quite the run so far, and it will be exciting to see what this outstanding student-athlete does in the future. TG
