When was the last time you went eight under after nine?
For Eric Boutwell of the University of Montevallo men’s golf, the answer is Monday.
Montevallo opened the 2024-25 season with a dominant round one performance in the Full Moon Invitational, held at Timberline Golf Course in Calera, Ala. Led by Boutwell, a senior at UM and Russellville, Ala., native, the Falcons sit nine strokes ahead of second place after the first round.
A 2024 NCAA Regional Individual qualifier, Boutwell broke the Montevallo single-round record with an opening round 60 (11-under) in his first 18 holes. He opened his round with an eight-under 28 on the front nine and added three more birdies on the back in his bogey-free round.
The senior holds a nine-stroke lead on the individual side after round one.
Several Falcons posted a pair of even-par rounds, with Lucas Albert and Bentley Van Pelt each turning in a 71 on the day. Jack Carstensen, Valention Fantozzi, and Seth Rogers shot two-over 73 after the first 18 holes, and Dodd Ferrelle and Jack Lawson each had impressive Montevallo debuts with a four-over 75 and a five-over 76, respectively.
After the first round of action, Montevallo’s top team leads the field with an overall score of seven-under while the Falcons’ second team sits in seventh with an 18-over first-round score.
The Falcons will complete Montevallo’s host event on Tuesday with the shotgun start set to begin the final round at 8 a.m. TG
