Marly Harris is a student-athlete at Bevill State Community College in Jasper, Alabama. A graduate of Carbon Hill High School, Marly cheers for the Bears and head coach Beth Borders. We recently caught up with Marly to talk to her about her future plans and reflect on the people who have been a positive influence on her life.
TG: You are a sophomore at Bevill State this year and deciding on a career is probably at the forefront of your mind. What is your dream career and what are your plans to make that happen?
MH: As a sophomore at Bevill, I have set my sights on a career in Radiation Therapy. The field fascinates me because it combines advanced technology with compassionate patient care to treat cancer and other diseases. My goal is to make a positive impact on patients’ lives during some of their most challenging times. To achieve this, I’m focusing on doing my best in my current coursework, especially in subjects like anatomy and physiology. I also hope to gain more knowledge about radiation therapy, so I intend to volunteer at local hospitals to get hands-on experience in this field.
TG: What made you decide on UNA and what do you look forward to most when you transfer there next year?
MH: I decided on the University of North Alabama for several different reasons. They have such a welcoming campus, and the first time I stepped on campus it felt like home to me. There are so many things to do in Florence, and I can not wait to get to experience living up there. I am also so excited to meet new people and create new friendships. I hope to make the most of my time while I am up there!
TG. You’ve already had a lot of accomplishments so far, both in high school and college. What is your greatest achievement and why?
MH: One of my greatest achievements is how I can positively impact my younger sisters’ lives. I have two younger sisters, Isabella who is twelve and Olivia who is three. Being the oldest sibling comes with the responsibility of setting a good example and doing your best to guide them through all life’s challenges. I take pride in being someone they both can rely on for support, whether it is helping Isabella with her homework or reading Olivia a bedtime story. Through my actions and words I hope to show them both how important it is to be kind to others. I also will always encourage them to pursue their passions, and will always be here for them even in the tough times. Watching them both grow up knowing that I can even play a small part in their development means the world to me. Being able to make a difference in their lives reminds me daily of the impact we can have on others, especially the ones closest to us.
TG: You’ve been blessed to have great influences in your life, who would you say is your “hero?”
MH: When thinking about heroes, my parents stand without a doubt. They have helped shape me into the person I am today through their unwavering support, wisdom, and love. Their sacrifices and dedication to providing the best for our family are nothing short of heroic. They’ve shown me the importance of hard work, compassion, and resilience in the face of adversity. Through their example, I’ve learned valuable life lessons and the strength to overcome challenges. They truly embody what it means to be a hero, and I’m forever grateful for their influence in my life.
TG: If you could be any Disney princess, who would it be and why?
MH: If I could be any Disney princess, I would choose Rapunzel from Tangled. Rapunzel is a character who embodies such curiosity and creativity. Her adventurous spirit and determination to follow her dreams is truly inspiring. Rapunzel’s kindness and ability to see the good in others, even in challenging situations, make her a beloved character. Her relationship with Flynn Rider showcases her ability to trust and form meaningful connections. Her long magical hair symbolizes her unique qualities and the strength she possesses. Rapunzel’s story is a beautiful reminder that with courage, kindness, and a bit of adventure, we can overcome obstacles and achieve our dreams. TG
