Talegate Featured Athlete – Cash Harrell, Opp High School

Cash Harrell is adamant that he wants to go to The University of Alabama to one day become an electrical engineer. He says he’s not so sure he wants to play sports at the college level, though.

His upcoming senior year may tell a different tale.

That’s because the rising senior is absolutely crushing it on the baseball diamond and football field for the Opp Bobcats. This past season, Harrell, who plays outfield and pitches for head baseball coach Michael Cassady, hit .438 with 36 RBI, 43 runs, 12 doubles, 2 triples, and 2 home runs. He added 18 steals and was hit by a pitch on 12 occasions. On the mound, he carried a 4-1 record and posted 22 strikeouts across 23 innings. His cumulative batting and pitching stats were good enough to garner first team All-State honors in Class 4A and a spot on the Dothan Eagle “Super 12” list.

Last fall on the gridiron, Cash collected 84 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, and 1 interception while playing linebacker for head football coach Ed Rigby. He was named “Player of the Week” by the Montgomery Advertiser and helped the Bobcats to a 7-4 overall record (5-2 in 4A Region 2).

“I just love how supportive everybody is in this community,” Cash said of his being a student-athlete at Opp. “I think everybody here keeps up with sports, and anywhere I go, people will tell me if I’ve done something good. It may even be someone I don’t even know.”

The son of Christy and Gary Harrell, Cash holds high standards in the classroom as well. He has a 4.3 overall GPA and says his favorite subject is math.

Outside of school and sports, Cash loves to play golf and video games. He says Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman is a player he’d like meet, and his dream car/truck is a Tesla Cybertruck. His go-to snack is Star Crunch, and his favorite restaurant is El Charro.

For now, he still plans to attend Alabama, but if the future engineer continues to electrify the athletic fields, it will be harder and harder to forego playing sports at the next level due to the programs that will inevitably vie for his services. Until then, Cash will relish in the senior year that is ahead of him, make the most of his grand finale at Opp High School, and focus on leaving a positive imprint on the school that shaped him. TG
