Alabama point guard Kira Lewis Jr. continues to sparkle in his freshman season at the Capstone, leading the Crimson Tide in scoring with 13.7 points per game.
Lewis, who at 17 is the second-youngest player in NCAA Division I this season, had 9 points in Bama’s 83-79 win over Mississippi State in Coleman Coliseum Tuesday night to push his season total to 273 through 20 games.
He currently leads Bama in 20-point games with four and is tied for the team lead in double-digit scoring games with 11. He scored a career high 24 in a 90-86 win over Wichita State on November 18, going 6-for-9 for the field and 11-for-11 at the foul line.
Historically speaking, Lewis has quite a ways to go to top the freshman performance of fellow point guard and wearer of jersey No. 2, Collin Sexton.
In his one year in crimson-and-white, Sexton had one of the best freshman seasons in Southeastern Conference history as he posted 632 points in 33 games for a 19.2 ppg average. That total was second-most in the league behind only the 636 of Georgia senior Yante Maten.
Following Sexton on the Tide’s all-time freshman scoring chart are James “Hollywood” Robinson, who scored 554 points in 33 games (16.8 average) in 1990-91 and forward Eddie Phillips, who had 477 points in 33 games (14.5 average) in 1978-79.
Lewis would have to go on a real scoring tear down the stretch to reach those lofty heights but the freshman marks of such Tide standouts as Leon Douglas (377 points) and Ennis Whatley (375) are well in sight for him.
Either way, it’s a pretty good start for a guy who, age-wise at least, should still be playing his senior year in high school. H&A
