Fifth Straight: Mountain Brook Cross-Country Dynasty Continues

The Mountain Brook High School boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams captured their fifth-straight state titles Saturday at the 70th AHSAA State Cross Country Championships at Oakville Indian Mounds State Park Jesse Owens Course in Moulton, Alabama. By the time the championships had concluded, the Spartan girls had collected their 28th team title (a state record), while the boys pulled even with Scottsboro High for a state-record 18 championships.

One individual story of the day was Hoover eighth grader Reese Gonzalez, who ran an incredible sub-18-minute time – clocking a 17:57.58 – over the 5K course to oust three-time defending state champion senior Sarah Tole of Auburn High School.
